- Joined Second City Chicago in 1969; became head writer.

- Co-wrote Animal House (1978) with Doug Kenney and Chris Miller.
- Directed Caddyshack, Vacation, Groundhog Day, Analyze This; wrote and played Egon Spengler in Ghostbusters.
- The Harold Ramis Film School at Second City (founded 2016) is named after him.
