Rhyming Couplets
1990s-present
Also known as Couplet Scene, Rhyme Scene, Bust a Rhyme
Two players perform a scene entirely in rhyming couplets: one player delivers a line; the partner completes the rhyme; then partner offers a new line for the first to rhyme.
Known for
- Rhythm and meter matter as much as rhyme — erratic lines kill the couplet feel.
- Physical engagement is critical — language games push players 'into their head' without grounding.
- Often a player writes their own couplet (setup + payoff) rather than relying on partner.
- Dr. Seuss-inspired rhyme schemes (AABB, AABBA) have become recent Hoopla variants.
