- Co-founded The Second City in Chicago in 1959 with Paul Sills and Howard Alk.
- Produced and directed numerous Second City revues for 25 years; sold his stake in 1984.
- Co-created and produced SCTV, the Toronto-based sketch spinoff.
- Was a founding member of the Compass Players at the University of Chicago.
- His producing career spanned the first generation (Nichols/May) to the fourth (Colbert/Carell/Fey).
