Film Dub
1988-present
Also known as Foreign Film Dub, Dubbed Movie, Foreign Movie
Two performers act a scene in gibberish or silently moving their mouths; two off-stage performers provide dubbed dialogue as if translating or overdubbing a foreign film.
Known for
- Dubbers should speak when the actor's mouth moves, stop when it stops — creates the translation illusion.
- On-stage actors should move mouths decisively when 'speaking' and still when silent — don't try to match dubber's words.
- Sometimes called 'Subtitles' when the translation is displayed textually instead of spoken.
- Classic UK Whose Line: Paul Merton and John Sessions swapping roles made this famous.
