- Founded 1977 in Ottawa by Jamie 'Willie' Wyllie and Howard Jerome, building on the 'Improv Olympics' concept developed by David Shepherd and Howard Jerome at Toronto's Homemade Theatre (1974).
- First tournaments: competitions between eight Ottawa high schools.
- Grew through the 1980s-90s to Kingston, Toronto, Vancouver; YTV gave it hour-long live coverage in the 1990s.
- Today: one of Canada's largest geographically-dispersed theatre festivals; 100,000+ alumni participants.
- National finals held at Babs Asper Theatre, National Arts Centre.
