Musical Director (Improv)
Also known as MD
The keyboard player and musical anchor of an improvised musical — reads scenes, picks song styles, provides vamps, underscores, and tracks thematic callbacks.
Known for
- Most often a keyboardist; some ensembles (Baby Wants Candy) use a full band.
- UCB model: MD reinforces game with song heightening. iO model: MD tracks world-building threads across scenes.
- Key MD skills: 13-style fluency (Laura Hall's list includes rock, country, gospel, Sondheim, ABBA, etc.), ear training, key-change memory, song-form pacing.
- MDs are often uncredited co-authors of the form — the show's arc lives in their choice of vamp changes.
