Gender in Scene Work
The decisions around how gender shows up in scenes — character cross-gender casting, gendered endowments, defaults, and whose bodies are assumed to play whom.
Known for
- Historical default in Chicago/UCB scene work: the two-person male-female scene as baseline; women often endowed as mothers/wives/girlfriends.
- Contemporary push: playing across gender as default ('I'm your father' between two women is a choice), non-binary performers explicitly named.
- Pragmatic craft: endowments are offers, not obligations — a performer can accept the character without accepting the gender-stereotyped baggage.
